map of Šibenik
Šibenik is an ancient port at the mouth of the Krka river, first mentioned in the documents of Croatian kings dating back to the 9th century. Overlooked by its hilltop castle, the city boasts fine architecture including Venetian palaces and St Jacob's Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts many visitors throughout the year. Many of the older buildings cling to the rocky hillside and these can best be appreciated from the promenade that runs the length of the town.
