map of Split
It is worth taking the 100 km journey along the scenic coast road South from Biograd to the historic city of Split where Roman emperor Diocletian built a palace for his retirement in 295 AD. Parts of the palace still host open-air festivals throughout the summer. Split is a major arts centre and houses many museums and art galleries.
The famous bronze statue of Grgur Ninski (Gregory of Nin) is another tourist favourite. Rub the statue's toe for luck! Take a walk to the top of Marjan hill to get out of town and see the beautiful views over Split.
